Apostille for Italy

The citizenship file, specifically
A jure sanguinis application proves an unbroken line from an Italian-born ancestor to you. Every link is a vital record: the ancestor's marriage, each child's birth, each marriage, each death, down to your own birth certificate. Plus the record that shows when (or whether) the ancestor naturalized as a US citizen, because that date determines whether the line was broken.
Practically, that means:
- Documents from several states, each apostilled by its own Secretary of State.
- Sometimes federal documents (USCIS certified records, a no-record letter), apostilled by the US Department of State.
- Long-form (literal) certified copies, because the consulate wants parents' names on every birth certificate.
- Discrepancies in names, dates, or spellings across generations, which Italian authorities take seriously and which sometimes need a court order or an amendment to fix before apostille.
- An Italian translation of every document.

Translation
Italy requires documents in Italian. Who may translate depends on where you file. Consulates in the US usually accept a plain, competent translation; comuni in Italy often want one certified, sometimes by a translator sworn before an Italian court (traduzione giurata / asseverata), which is done in Italy. Confirm with the specific office. If a US certified translation is acceptable, we bundle it.
What goes wrong
- Short-form certificates. Order the long form with parents' names.
- A name spelled differently on two documents with no explanation. Address it before apostilling; the apostille does not fix content.
- Trying to apostille the Certificate of Naturalization itself. Use a certified USCIS or court record.
- Translating before apostilling when the office wanted the apostille translated too.

How many documents does a jure sanguinis application need?
Usually between eight and twenty: the birth, marriage, and death certificates of every person in the line from the Italian-born ancestor down to you, plus naturalization records or a no-record letter. Every US document needs its own apostille and an Italian translation. We quote the whole file as a package.
Can the translation be done in the US?
It depends on where you file. Italian consulates in the US generally accept translations done by any competent translator, without certification, but some consulates and most Italian comuni want the translation certified or done by a translator known to them. Ask the consulate or comune handling your case; we can bundle a certified translation if a US one is accepted.
Do naturalization records need an apostille?
A Certificate of Naturalization cannot be apostilled directly. Citizenship applications typically use a certified copy of the naturalization record from USCIS or the court that granted it, or a USCIS letter stating no record exists, and those certified documents get a federal or state apostille depending on who issued them. This is the most technical part of an Italian citizenship file; send us what you have and we sort it.
How old can the documents be?
Italian authorities are more relaxed than Spain on civil-status records; older certified copies are usually fine if legible and complete. The FBI check for elective residency visas does have a freshness expectation at most consulates, commonly six months.
